I recently was commissioned to create a wedding ring for a student at MIT. The student contacted his mother in India and asked her to send him a piece of wood from what is called “the tree of life” also know as the Ashwatha tree or the Peepal tree. This tree is unusual in that it grows both upwards as well as top to bottom. Its leaves and branches turn into roots and continue to grow even though other parts of the tree may have died. In India one may find Ashwatha trees that are hundreds to thousands of years old. It is said that Buddha got his enlightenment under a Peepal tree. There was a time in India when a Peepal tree was planted in the premises of every temple, and was regarded as the Tree of Life.
